Acquisition of ACCPAC by Sage Finalized

The acquisition of ACCPAC International, Inc. by The Sage Group, plc is complete.  As part of Sage, which is known as Best Software in North America, ACCPAC is part of an organization focused exclusively on business applications for small and medium-sized businesses.  Computer Associates International, Inc. sold its 90 percent ownership in ACCPAC International, Inc. for $110 million.  This sale culminates CA's multi-year effort to exit the business applications market and focus on management software to enable organizations to manage their IT environments.

“We are pleased to have completed the acquisition of ACCPAC as their applications will help us better serve small and medium-sized businesses in North America,” said Best Software CEO Ron Verni.  “Specifically for our CRM division, ACCPAC’s hosted solutions now give us a complete offering to go with our desktop solutions and our award winning ACT! And SalesLogix product lines.”

ACCPAC brings approximately 540,000 customers and over 3000 business partners like Mazzullo, Inc. to Best/Sage.  Best Software has been providing small and mid-sized customers with business applications for over 25 years.  ACCPAC users should rest assured that there are no plans to eliminate any of the ACCPAC products and no changes to the existing ACCPAC product release schedule.  We feel that ACCPAC’s future is brighter than ever.

Mazzullo, Inc. and ADP

ADP logo

Dedicated to world-class service and offering processing efficiencies by interfacing ADP to ACCPAC General Ledger and ACCPAC HR, Mazzullo, Inc. and ADP are partnering to bring the best of both to your business.

Through simple Windows-based file sharing, information can be shared without time consuming re-keying or human error.  ADP offers Internet-based time and attendance software, payroll processing, and report generation to allow multiple users to access crucial information to make informed management decisions and reduce the duplication of efforts.

Recently, a Mazzullo, Inc. client left a national competitor of ADP’s to take advantage of ADP’s telephone-based time and attendance system that allows employees at job sites to “clock-in” without cumbersome hardware and software links.  The Time data downloads into payroll which will produce checks, direct deposits or even debit cards as forms of payment to employees without bank accounts.  Payroll general ledger information, job and labor cost totals can be downloaded into ACCPAC to complete the Payroll process.

Debbie and Beth work closely with Tami Keiser at ADP (410-933-6486) to provide free analysis of your current system and price quotes.  Tami can offer Mazzullo, Inc. clients a 15% partner discount for new ADP clients.  ADP offers very competitive pricing.

Client Profile:  Family Service Foundation

Founded in 1937, Family Service Foundation (FSF) is a non-profit mental health and social service agency located in Landover Hills, Maryland.  FSF is dedicated to serving both hearing and deaf individuals, including those with chronic mental illness and developmental disabilities.  FSF provides a full range of psychiatric counseling and clinical services to individuals and families, and employs a total of 265 people.

In 1994, Family Service Foundation turned to Mazzullo, Inc. to recommend a new accounting system that would help them with their growing non-profit business.  At that time they already had 45 different departments.  Financial reporting for each department and consolidated groups of departments was critical.  Maintaining separate fund balances, a strong audit trail and ease of use were other requirements of the software.  At that time they choose ACCPAC Plus General Ledger, Accounts Payable and US Payroll to manage the business.

In 1996, Family Service Foundation upgraded to ACCPAC Advantage Series to take advantage of the additional flexibility offered by the Windows-based software.  As the number of employees and sophistication of their payroll needs grew, they decided to outsource payroll to ADP.  With the ACCPAC third party product by Musick Intl., they are able to import the payroll entries into the ACCPAC general ledger with all of the desired departmental breakdown.

Recently, FSF needed a new server for their accounting system.  Rather than purchasing a Microsoft server operating system and paying all of the related licenses for each user, FSF decided to purchase a Linux server.  Since the ACCPAC Advantage Series version 5.2 upgrade came with an IBM DB2 server and 3 licenses, FSF just had to switch the LanPaks from Pervasive to IBM DB2 and purchase the additional IBM DB2 licenses at a very nominal cost.  This solution saved them several thousand dollars. After Mark Prindle of Mark’s Communication Support, Inc. set up the Linux server, Mazzullo, Inc. was able to dump the Pervasive database, load the data into the IBM DB2 database and we had FSF back up and running within half a day.  “The performance is incredible” says Reuben Mbinda, CFO of Family Service Foundation.  “There was no learning curve at all.  The end user doesn’t notice any difference at all other than how fast it is.  We were even able to merge back in 5 years of transaction detail that we had to purge out to get reasonable performance on the old setup."

Technical Corner

Q.      All of a sudden, I have to go in to file\printer setting every time before I print a report and be sure that the correct printer and printer setting are selected.  It used to remember this for every report. What happened?

A:  There is a file in each users ACCPAC\User folder called databaseID_p.ism.  For example, if the user name is John and the database ID is SAMINC, then the file you are looking for is ACCPAC\Users\John\saminc_p.ism.  This file contains all of the user-specified options for each report.  Sometimes this file can get corrupted.  You can delete this file and it will get recreated with the default settings the next time John logs in to SAMINC.  John can reselect all of the printer settings and after that, it should remember it.  Deleting the _p.ism file has solved a myriad of problems.  The only downside is that you have to reselect your printer preferences.

Sherlock

Q.       Sometimes when I print a report, I get the error message that an invalid printer is specified and the report won’t print.  What can I do to print this report?

A:  Try setting the printer destination to “preview” and then changing the printer selection from within the preview to the proper printer.  This will save that printer with the report and you shouldn’t have the problem next time.  To change your print destination to preview, select file and then print destination.  Choose preview and then click on OK.  Within the Crystal preview, click on the icon with the printer with a yellow wrench (printer setup) and choose the specific printer.

Q.    How can I move my ACCPAC database to a new server or different location?

A.       Before you edit a database profile to change the folder where ACCPAC looks for the data, you must copy the database to the new folder.

·          Close ACCPAC and copy the files in \\Program files\ACCPAC\DATA\databaseID to the new folder.

·           Start Database Setup, highlight the database profile you are moving, and click Edit.  In the Edit Pervasive.SQL Database profile dialog box, type a new path or click the Browse Button to display a list of folders and drives, select the new folder, then click the OK button.  You can use the full UNC pathname or a mapped drive.  An example of a UNC pathname is:  \\computername\sharedfolder\ACCPAC\programs.  Note:  do not create a new entry for the database.  You cannot have two databases with the same database ID.

To verify that the database profile points to the correct data location, leave Database Setup, start ACCPAC, and select the company.  If the correct data is displayed, delete the data files from the original data folder.
